At the 64th National awards, Akshay Kumar bagged the award for the Best Actor for his role in movie Rustom. The movie was based on the real life of commander K.M. Nanavati being tried for the murder of his wife’s lover Ahuja.
What actually happened?
Sylvia the wife of Nanavati herself revealed everything about the relationship. Nanavati dropped the family at the theatre and went to the Naval base to acquire a Gun. 3 shots were fired at Ahuja as per Ahuja’s Servant. Then Nanavati went to provost Marshall and Police to confess his crime.
The High Court agreed with the prosecution’s argument and sentenced Nanavati to life imprisonment for culpable homicide amounting to murder. The Supreme Court confirmed the verdict of the High Court in November 1961.
During this time, Jawaharlal Nehru was the Prime Minister of India and his sister, Vijaylakshmi Pandit, was governor of Maharashtra. Later Nanavati was Released from jail after 3 years of Prison considering the circles that Nanavati had in the Parsi community. Ahuja’s sister also signed the petition to pardon Nanavati after which he was released on the order of the then Governor of Maharashtra.
